State of the New Space Economy
The Land of the Rising Sun has now conquered the Moon! And what’s more, they did it with one arm tied behind their back, or more accurately, with only a single functioning engine on their robotic SLIM probe.
A tense lunar landing unfolded on January 19th as telemetry gradually trickled back to JAXA’s mission control in Japan. The island country officially became the 5th in history to successfully perform a soft landing on the Moon, however, it has since become apparent that the feat was only a partial win, with the craft landing on its side and suffering critical power loss because of it.
Nevertheless, SLIM was able to pull off its mission of releasing two scientific payload onto the lunar surface, and earned Japan it’s place in the history books.
While some might turn their nose at the idea of dangerous “billionaire joyrides,” space tourism had an incredible year in 2023 that isn’t looking to slow down into the new year anytime soon.
Spaceflight tourism company Virgin Galactic, which offers suborbital flights on its Unity spaceplane, has performed six crewed missions in nearly as many months, and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has also returned its New Shepherd rocket to flight as well, promising more crewed missions soon.
With SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn missions slated for 2024, which will include the first ever commercial spacewalk performed by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman and company, the momentum is only continuing to build.
The title says it all. Nearly 57 years ago, the tragic Apollo 1 fires that claimed the lives of three American astronauts kickstarted the first major national discussions on spaceflight safety. Congress established the Aerospace Advisory Panel in 1968 to provide insight for NASA administration on matters of safety, and each year their report sets the standard for the agency’s policy.
With the Artemis-II crewed flight around the Moon pushed from 2024 to 2025 due to heat tile issues on the Orion capsule (the same defect that led to the loss of space shuttle Columbia in 2003), the panel’s report comes at a pivotal time for NASA, which assures that the safety of its human spaceflight programs are its top priority.
