State of the New Space Economy
1) Launch like an Egyptian: If the Second Space Race wasn’t moving fast enough for you, news just broke that Egypt has joined China’s ambitious International Lunar Research Station moon base initiative.
Egypt joins the likes of Russia, Belarus, China, Pakistan, South Africa, and Venezuela in a joint effort to build an international scientific station in the lunar south pole sometime in the early to mid 2030s. Egypt will be the first Arab country to join its ranks, creating some international competition against the American-led Artemis Accords.
2) Halley’s Comet Homeward Bound: After years flying through deep space, the iconic Halley’s Comet has begun to make its long journey back toward Earth. A 38-year long journey, to be exact.
Thanks to a highly elliptical orbit around the sun, the world’s most famous comet makes an approximately 76-year loop that has captivated stargazers for hundreds of years across history.
If you envision yourself still kicking in 2061 when the comet returns, you won’t want to miss the once in a lifetime experience! Maybe by then, thanks to life extension technology, some lucky few will be the first able to live long enough to witness the comet twice in one lifetime?
3) NASA’s Mars Sample Return in Hot Water: While perhaps unsurprising, the $10 billion - with a B - price tag for NASA’s ambitious Mars Sample Return project is casting doubt on its facilitation.
Initially envisioned to search for life, the linked editorial above proposes some interesting alternatives to how that same mission could be applied without aggregating it all onto one high-risk, interplanetary sample return. Proponents of the MSR argue that it is too late to turn back now, while detractors think that capital could be best allocated pretty much anywhere else.
While the whole issue could have been avoided if NASA had been granted a larger budget, cutting incredible programs due to funding limits are harsh realities that space programs often must deal with. Either way, it looks like a lot of people with their eyes on the Red Planet won’t be happy with the result.
