Today’s Subject of Space: The Rise of Space Services

Space is far more than just rockets and explosions.

Contrary to many industry outsiders, there is an entire ecosystem of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and service providers that serve as the backbone of the New Space Economy.

As the space economy takes off, it will take so much more than than just rockets and manufacturing to make it truly sustainable, economical, and standardized.

If launch providers like SpaceX and Rocket Lab are the horse, then this underlying ecosystem is the bit and harness that connect it to the cart.

And they’re worth talking about. Here’s a breakdown of some of the notable service providers that make the space industry possible:

🖊️ - Insurance

Payloads and aerospace hardware is expensive, and prone to “rapid unscheduled disassemblies.” Launch providers and customers alike are frequent to invest in insurance to cover their downside.

If you’re not careful, you could end up with losses in the tens of millions, as some unfortunates have found themselves experiencing in 2023. Insurance is rarely anyone’s favorite topic, but when dealing with a high risk, high expense industry like aerospace, proper liability protection becomes a necessity.

🤝 - Brokerage

Need to launch something to space, but don’t know where to start? There’s an entire network of companies that can not only broker a deal with the best launch provider, but can assist with the development or procurement of satellites busses to ferry that payload, procurement of insurance, etc.

These companies exist to make space easy and accessible, and some, such as Exolaunch, have found great success serving growing space markets in Europe and the Americas.

🔈 - Communications

Marketing and advertising in the aerospace industry is tricky. Is a Facebook ad really something an aerospace & defense manufacturer like SpaceX would ever use? As it turns out, yes!

This category of company serves all the others, in addition to government space agencies, with launching products and services in the industry. From recruitment ads and event organization to lead management and cold outreach, these companies handle the most tedious aspects of marketing for space companies to focus on their top priorities.

State of the New Space Economy

  • Are you a space company considering sharing your precious data with others? Whether it’s proprietary hardware IP or collision avoidance software that you think could help others, consider the risks vs rewards of sharing space data, and the regulation to abide by!

  • Open access Earth observation data courtesy of the US taxpayer gives anyone on Earth all the info they could want about, well, Earth.

  • Curious about how the Space Force numbers objects tracked? You should be, because China just dumped several unknown objects into Earth orbit from a classified military spaceplane
