State of the New Space Economy

1) China Launches Secretive Spaceplane: An experimental and highly secretive Chinese spaceplane has been launched from the Gobi desert on December 14th.

With an ever shrinking gap between its launch cadence, the reusable spaceplane appears to be making progress in its mission. Chinese state media has reported that the plane has reached low-Earth orbit, where it will remain for an undisclosed amount of time.

2) U.S House Passes $30B Defense Package (Probably Because of the Previous Story): The FY24 National Defense Authorization Act passed the house and Senate by an 87-13 majority, and is now on its way to the president’s desk.

The White House has publicly stated that President Biden will sign the act, granting the U.S Space Force a whopping $30 billion extra dollars to enjoy, pushing its 2024 budget past even NASA’s. Clearly, the U.S government is preparing for more military competition in the space domain, likely with a certain country that occupies the other two story slots.

3) China Also Launches Secretive Satellite: Using its powerful Long March 5 heavy-lift rocket, the Beijing China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has launched a highly classified Yaogon-41 optical satellite towards the sun.

The satellite was announced to be developed, but not accompanied with imagery, and given the Yaogon series of satellites has been used for military purposes, suggests that this one may be as well.
