State of the New Space Economy
Following two previous high profile explosions and a slew of regulatory scrutiny, America’s favorite commercial launch company has launched the third orbital test flight of its prototype Starship rocket.
Holding the record as the largest functioning rocket ever built, Starship embodies SpaceX’s vision of a multiplanetary humanity - requiring massive amounts of payload to be ferried across the solar system on an equally massive rocket.
The third flight test passed multiple major hurdles that far exceeded goals set by previous flight tests. Not only did the rocket successfully reach orbit with the powerful Super Heavy booster and deploy the Starship second stage, but then Starship was able to demonstrate the opening of its payload doors, live satellite connection through Starlink, and begin to enter planned re-entry.
Unfortunately, Starship failed to survive re-entry, burning to a crisp in the fiery return through Earth’s atmosphere. If this were a race, it’d be a trip at the finish line, but several successful steps prior made this mission a success over all that came before it. And some of those past failures are still being dealt with.
As of this writing, SpaceX has been under intense Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and US Fish and Wildlife (USFW) scrutiny for the previous two explosions, casting concerns over NASA’s investment in commercial enterprise. And this third one, which also included the destruction of the booster shortly after separation, is likely to draw regulatory review as well.
With NASA having delayed the Artemis program’s return to the Moon for a third time as early as January, citing Starship architecture pace as one of the schedule-slowing line items, the pressure is on for consecutive orbital test successes for SpaceX to make good on its vision of a multiplanetary humanity.
